In an agreement with ABYC, West Marine has launched a new program for select West Marine branded components that fall under applicable ABYC standards, with qualifying components eligible to use the Certified to ABYC Standards label.
This program is intended to enhance safety and quality while helping consumers better understand why standards matter in boating safety.
Below are some FAQ’s about West Marine’s new initiative.

What does the logo mean to consumers?
The “Certified to ABYC Standards” label signals safety and credibility — a visible symbol to boaters that the component meets rigorous ABYC standards for recreational boating safety.
How does it work?
It is technically a self-certification program, not a direct ABYC component certification. Key requirements include:
- West Marine must gather and maintain all required documentation (test reports, component audit tools, component records).
- All manufacturers involved must be ISO 9000 certified or equivalent.
- Once all technical testing has been reviewed and validated, the component can carry the “Certified to ABYC Standards” label.
- ABYC can conduct regular audits the technical files to verify compliance and provide technical guidance to West Marine and its vendors.
Does this mean ABYC independently tested the component?
No. This is a West Marine Certified Component that uses applicable ABYC Standards. West Marine is responsible for maintaining the technical documentation, test reports and supporting records showing that the component meets applicable requirements.
How do I know if a component is part of the program?
Not all components qualify — only those covered by applicable safety-related ABYC standards.
Look for the Certified to ABYC Standards label on qualifying packaging or product materials.
Is proper installation still important?
Yes. Proper installation is critical. Even a product built to applicable standards should be installed and used correctly according to manufacturer instructions and recommended best practices. ABYC Certified Technicians are a great resource because they have been trained to the standards.
Who can participate in the program?
At his time only West Marine branded components qualify for the “Certified to ABYC standards logo. This is currently a 2-year proof-of-concept program, exclusive to West Marine.
Is this different from the NMMA Boat & Yacht Certification program?
Yes, the NMMA Boat & Yacht Certification is through the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and certifies a whole boat to the ABYC standards, while this certification is only for applicable components.
What if I see other ABYC logos on components?
ABYC members may use the ABYC member logo on components. This logo does not represent any testing, verification, or compliance of a component, only that the manufacturer is an ABYC member.
Where can I find ABYC standards?
A list of ABYC standards by committee can be found at: https://abycinc.org/standards-list
Full access to the standards is available exclusively to ABYC members through the ABYC Standards Library. Click here to learn about membership.
How is this different from ABYC’s former Component Certification Program with IMCI?
ABYC’s former Component Certification Program with IMCI was a third-party certification program in which IMCI confirmed that component samples complied with applicable ABYC standards and issued certificates bearing the ABYC registered logo.
The West Marine agreement is a two-year proof of concept using a self-certification model supported by technical files, test reports and documentation. West Marine is responsible for maintaining compliance documentation, and ABYC may review or audit those technical files. ABYC is not independently testing the components under this agreement.
Can I say my product is certified to ABYC standards?
Not at this time. While this program and specific label usage are currently exclusive to West Marine, this does not change the long-standing value ABYC places on all manufacturers that build to ABYC standards. We encourage members to make the most of their ABYC membership by sharing their commitment to standards, quality and safer boating with customers. ABYC manufacturing members may continue to use the ABYC Member logo in marketing and packaging and reference standards compliance using approved statements consistent with ABYC brand guidelines.
