A collaboration with The National Association of Sate Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) has allowed ABYC to offer this specialized course previously available to only marine law enforcement officers and related personnel. This course is open to specific ABYC membership levels only.

Course Fees

Course registration fee:$1,495

Fee includes student manual, a set of diagramming templates, a copy the National Boating Accident Investigation Field Guide, and lunch daily.

This course is open to ABYC Business Membership levels and above only.



The Boating Accident Investigation and Analysis Level 1 Comprehensive Course provides the opportunity to develop and perfect the skills necessary to conduct a thorough and comprehensive recreational boating accident investigation. The course is presented in a blended learning format comprised of both classroom instruction and an online portion that must be completed prior to the start of the class.

There will also be a “hands-on” session held at the Matapeake DNR. More details will follow.

The classroom portion covers the following topics:

·        Human Factors Associated with Boating Accidents

·        Vessel Stability Concepts & Issues
·        Basics of Electricity & Electrical Systems
·        Fires & Explosions
·        Electric Shock Drowning (ESD)
·        Carbon Monoxide Accidents

The online portion is a 4-hour session and includes the following topics:

·        Boat Accident Reporting Requirements & The Boating Accident Reporting Database
·        Defect Notifications
·        Fraud
·        Standards & Regulations
·        Lightning & Other High Voltage Accidents
·        Ignition Protection
·        Gasoline Fuel Systems
·        Ventilation Systems


Criteria Performance Standard/Credit Details

Upon successful completion of the course, you will demonstrate an understanding of the principles and techniques necessary to conduct a thorough and complete accident investigation. A compilation of performance measures will be used, including scenario review, class discussion, practical activities and objective testing.

ADA Requests
Students with ADA accommodations must inform the ABYC in writing of said needs at the time of registration to ensure that any special accommodations can be made for taking the course.

Requests for cancellation and refund of a class registration must be submitted, in writing, prior to March 31, 2019. Because of the guaranteed status of this specialized class, any cancellation request received after February 1, 2019 will be charged a cancellation fee of $700.  Refunds will not be available for non-attendance or for requests received after March 11, 2019.  Cancellation requests may be emailed to Casey Bates at cbates@abycinc.org. Refunds will be issued within 30 days after the course end date.

ABYC reserves the right to cancel the course based on enrollment and/or instructor availability no later than two weeks prior to the course start date.  Please take this into consideration when making any travel or accommodation arrangements.  ABYC will not provide any reimbursements for travel expenses.
