On October 1, 2013, the marine industry lost a good friend and colleague, John Carl "Jack" Hornor to brain disease. He was 68.

Jack celebrated life on the water as a sailor. He was a naval architect and marine surveyor with many ties to the recreational boating industry.  He was the founder and owner of Marine Survey & Design Company and was a mentor to many in the marine industry. “Jack was a close friend and mentor for me personally and many of the ABYC staff,” shared John Adey, ABYC President. “His expertise and sage advice will certainly be missed.” “Jack managed to make difficult things simple and coupled that with a great personality,” expressed Dave Marlow, ABYC Chairman. “He will be missed but not forgotten.”

Jack had a passion for education that was passed down from his parents Dorothy and Audra who were career school teachers.  This, and Jack’s deep interest and appreciation for the work of ABYC and the ABYC Foundation is the genesis for the Jack, Dorothy & Audra Hornor Memorial Scholarship Fund

Students looking to enter into or continue their education in the marine industry through ABYC certifications or a Marine League School are all eligible for funds as the program grows.  Many Marine League Schools have committed to matching funds provided through this scholarship program.
