Instructors

Ed Sherman — Senior Instructor/Curriculum Designer

Ed currently serves as the Curriculum Designer and Senior Instructor for all of the ABYC's educational offerings. He also serves as the Senior Staff writer for the ABYC and manager of educational programming quality control. Ed is a 35 year industry veteran who has worked in a variety of marine industry sales, service and management positions.

Ed is the past chairman of the Marine Technology Department at New England Institute of Technology and past President of the RI Marine Trades Association. He also served as President of the International Sailing Institute, a RI group that founded the first Maritime Theme Charter primary school in Rhode Island.

In 1998, Ed was the recipient of the Dennis Snow President's award from the American Boat Builder's and Repairers Association for his curriculum development work for that group.

Ed is an award winning technical writer who has authored many articles over the years for Cruising World Magazine and spent seven years as their Electronics Editor. He is a frequent contributor to Professional Boat Builder Magazine.

Ed is the author of two books to date, Outboard Engines, Maintenance Troubleshooting and Repair, which was recently released in a German language edition and The Powerboater's Guide to Electrical Systems. Most recently, Ed co-authored the second edition of the Minor Brotherton classic, The Twelve Volt Bible for Boats. He is currently working on a new book entitled Advanced Electrical Troubleshooting for the Marine Technician which will be released in early 2006.

Larry Goudy

Larry Goudy has been owner-operator of G & G Marina on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri for over 30 Years His career in the marine industry started in high school while working in the Marina that he owns today. His first technical training was with OMC in the mid sixties. His career has included two years at the University of Missouri, a tour in the Marine Corps as a radar instructor, instructing various marine classes at technical schools, designing and instructing a two year marine college degree program, maintaining a master outboard technician rating for 25 years, earning ABYC Certifications in Electrical, Gas and Diesel Systems, and earning an AA degree from State Fair Community College. Currently he manages his marina and instructs Electrical and Gas Systems for ABYC and Marine Management classes for AMTECH.

Clyde Head

Clyde Head has been involved in the manufacturing of pleasure boats and some commercial craft since 1971. He has been a member of NMMA (National Marine Manufacturer's Association) since it was the BIA (Boating Industry Association) and has served on the Boat and Yacht Certification Committee for over ten years. Clyde is an NMMA compliance inspector and is a CE inspector for the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI). He is a member of ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) and is an instructor for ABYC's Basic Electricity, Electrical Certification, and Standards Accreditation courses. He is an ABYC Certified Marine Electrical Technician and ABYC Standards Accredited. He is also a certified marine surveyor by the Association of Certified Marine Surveyors (ACMS).

Clyde holds the Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering and the Master of Science degree in Management from Vanderbilt University. He served for four years in the Nuclear Power Program of the US Navy.

He believes in the "Quality Approach" to boat building and insists that "sweating the details" is the only way to do it right. He is enthusiastic about helping manufacturers build safer and better boats.

David Rifkin

Capt. Rifkin, hailing from Miami, FL holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of South Florida. He served 24 years in the United States Navy rising to the rank of Captain before retiring in 2000. During his career he served on 5 nuclear powered submarines which included assignments Engineering Officer, Navigator, Executive Officer, and Commanding Officer. Following retirement he worked for a worldwide corrosion control company and then started his own marine surveying business. Most recently, his business has become focused on marine corrosion detection, prevention, and training, as well as the inspection of marina facilities for electrical safety issues and concerns. He currently speaks on corrosion topics to boating groups and technical personnel. Capt. Rifkin holds a USCG Masters license and currently resides in Jacksonville, FL with his family.

Mickey Smith

Mickey Smith is the president and owner of Boat Systems, Inc. a yacht system consulting firm in Stuart, Florida for the last four years. Mickey earned a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering Technology from Ohio Institute of Technology in 1976 with continuing education at Oakland University in the area of digital control systems. He has experience with electric vehicle research, battery technology, diesel engine systems, and hydraulic control systems while working for General Motors Research Laboratories, Ford Motor Diversified Products, Koehring/Pegasus. He also has had experience as a Field Applications Engineer with Intel Corporation with industrial control and power systems, military electronics and digital control systems. In 1998 Mickey retired from Intel Corporation and, with his family set out to cruise the Atlantic.

In 2002, Mickey established the consulting firm for yacht electrical and mechanical systems engineering. He is an ABYC Certified Marine Electrical Technician, an ABYC Certified Diesel Engines Technician, and an ABYC Certified Marine Corrosion Technician and is ABYC Standards Accredited. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., (IEEE). Mickey is a member of ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) and is an instructor for ABYC's Basic Marine Electrical Seminar and Electrical Certification course. His consulting firm has done electrical and systems consulting on boats ranging from 35 feet to 96 feet, including long range motor yachts, power catamarans, and boats with diesel-electric propulsion systems. Mickey currently resides with his family in the Stuart, Florida area.
